Ever wanted to send someone a whale? A bear? Or perhaps a big cuddly moose? We all know how impractical that can be… and don’t even get me started on customs and security!
So I was very relieved the other day when I found out about Green Banana Cards – the perfect postcard solution for the hassle of shipping big animals!
Cute, right? :)
Virginie St-Jean is the designer behind Green Banana Cards project. She started in 2008 with the Mail a Moose design as a greeting card… but eventually realized there was a much higher demand for postcards! So she switched to the postcard format, and has been steadily introducing new animals to her collection since then. You can send 14 different animals across the world! :)
- How did you get started doing stationery design?

I love everything that has to do with printed art. However, since it’s an art that’s been declining in popularity with the general public, I thought the best way to go about it was to create something out of the ordinary, so that even people who might not usually buy postcards would be tempted because of the novelty factor.
- Where do you find your inspiration?

I have always loved drawing animals, and after spending some time in the Yukon, I was trying to think of a product that I could sell there. That’s how I thought of creating the Mail a Moose design. Most of my designs are iconic Canadian animals, but I’m also inspired by animals that tourists in other countries might be interested in mailing back home. I printed southern US animals like a gator and a manatee recently, and I plan to introduce an Australian animal collection by next summer. I also regularly work on custom orders, such as a Guernsey Cow for the Island of Guernsey, UK and a T-Rex and Mammoth for Canadian Museums.

Yes, I think everyone likes receiving something fun in the mail since it rarely happens anymore. When traveling, I really enjoy finding special cards to send back home. I also occasionally frame interesting graphic cards for home decor when I find the right ones.

These are so much fun! I'd mail a beaver. :) Moose in the king in the Finnish forests, though, so it would be a hard choice.

Wow, they are very cute! I immediately fell in love with the manatee. As a dive instructor it has been my biggest dream for years to swimm with these friendly giants. Unfortunately, it is quite expensive to fly to the States, so I became a passionate manatee collector instead. A manatee postcard would be the best :-).

I've sent these cards lots of times (see my "sent" gallery on PC), and love them to bits. I think my favorite is the moose, and I wish there was a dragon. I have such trouble mailing dragons ... they can't get beyond the "flammable" restriction at the post office.
I must love the sasquatch best as that is the one I purchased although all were great. I love the bears and the wolf and the moose. Love the suggestions for the dragons and the sharks and maybe someday a polar bear?

What a fun and clever design! I think children would love these but also adults! I like novelty cards of all types so these would be a great addition to my lifelong collection (over 50 years)!! I think all the designs are cute but suppose I would choose the moose! Also, I think it would be fun to see on elf a buffalo!

What a wonderful concept! I love the fact that you have an assorted pack since it is difficult to choose just one. They are all adorable but my favorite is the gator since we used to live in Louisiana. You might try a razorback pig for all the Arkansas fans and you know he would be just too cute!

Woooooow, I absolutely love these cards! Great idea, but I am little afraid, that I would like to keep the card as it is, not damage it by cuting the animal - so please, could this be of two pages - one with the animal for cutting it out at the second for the message and some beautiful stamps on it? :-)

Being from Florida, I love the 'gator cards, but I used to live on a boat named Manatee, so they are pretty special too. These are all so clever and well designed. Kudos to Green Banana for these creations.

These are WONDERFUL cards! My favorite is the puffin.

MOOSE is the best!
My favourite is the wolf of course! 'Cause it's my providences (Värmland, Sweden that is) animal and also the animal of our local ice hockey team. (Our fanclub is even called Wolfpack!)

Mail a Whale! I like the rhyme. Mail a Lobster is also pretty neat. Lobsters are funny-looking creatures. I'd also like to see a squirrel or snail or OWL! They're all charming though. :)

Utter genius! Having come unstuck trying to mail large, and frankly, un-cooperative creatures I heartily welcome the idea of simplifying the task. Tough call to choose but it's definitely between the lobster and the beaver.
Hard to pick they are all cute but I think from what I saw my favorite would be the Dolphin, They look so happy all the time. And remind me of our cruise in Sept 2012 when we swam with the Dolphins.

Definitely Mail a Gator. I live within blocks of actual gators, but they are very hard to write and stamp, and they do not fit in the mail slot at the post office ;)
They all look awesome and I love them all! But if I had to pick it'd be the lobster!!! Apparently they "navigate by smell, taste with their feet, listen with their legs" cooool!

The cards are all great, my favorite is the gator though, because I used to mail gator postcards to my dad, because he couldn't believe that we had a huge gator in a little like 5 minutes down the road. (He lives in Germany - we have gators in the zoo... :)

My favorite is the moose. We have over 600 moose in northern Colorado and I like to take a drive to go moose "hunting". How about mail and elk to sell in Rocky Mountain National Park? Or Jackalope?
I adore the lobster one! It is so different, and not often seen on a postcard. It also reminds me of my pup's favourite toy, which is a bright red lobster named Lobby.

I can't decide between the killer whale and the humpback whale. I love cetaceans so much and both of these animals are really inspiring. In the end, I think I would choose the humpback whale because its lengthy migration is reminiscent of the postcards that we send back and forth between countries!

Mail a moose has always been my favourite. Any moose. But I just discovered mail a bear and mail a lobster, and I love them too !
Since I live in a place with a lot of whale-watching and have a lot of friends I call whale-huggers, I was partial to the whales, especially the Humpback. But my personal favorite, hands down, is the Sasquatch. Yes, definitely the Sasquatch. Virginie is right: how else are you going to get through Customs with a Sasquatch?!

I adore this wonderful postcards! I have never seen such unusual postcards. Really amazing. I like most of all "Mail a Lobster" because i like bright colour and many details of lobster. But all postcard are cool so it was hard to choose :)
I love every postcards! Great Idea! :) But the most with Beaver and Moose. You can also create a postcard with Panda - it might be cool!

'Mail a Snail' has so many jokes but my true favourite is the wolf. O:)
They are just so creative!!!!I like the lobster because it is a very expensive and delicious dish in my country.

That must be the wolf, because a month ago they found a dead wolf on the side of a road. That could mean, that there are some living wild in the Netherlands.
