Blog > December Writing Prompt: Favourite movie

  icon

The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcards’ messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!

November was long, and it’s been getting cold here, so I’m thinking cosy thoughts here and planning on snuggling up. Of course, I’d usually choose a book… but even I have some favourite movies that I like to watch over again, at least once a year. So that’s our writing prompt for this month!

In December, write about the movie(s) you can watch over and over again!
The Apollo 13 movie poster, showing the moon between a small spacecraft and Earth, with actor credits for Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinese and Ed Harris

When I mentioned I was picking this prompt, I immediately said that I’d have to flip a coin and choose between Howl’s Moving Castle and Apollo 13, two movies that have almost nothing in common except that I’ve watched both at least a dozen times. Miyazaki’s animation is gorgeous, and I love Calcifer (“here’s another curse for you: may all your bacon burn!”)… but then, you know, Apollo 13. Even though they get safely back to Earth, I still choke up every time.

Of course, there are many other movies I could give an honourable mention. The more I think about it, the more they crowd my mind! Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, of course, and the extended cuts of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, and—on a completely different note again—Amélie.

How about you? Is it an easy choice? Do you have a long list of favourites to share? We’d love to hear in the comments, and don’t forget: you can write about this on your postcards this month if you’re stumped for what to write!

Detective series are my favourite ones, especially Columbo, Aghata Christie's Poirot, Miss Marple, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Monk and others.

In December there are films like "Love actually" or "The Muppet's Christmas Carol" that are must-sees each year. Apart from that I'd mention "Lala Land" and "Before sunrise" as films that I can watch again and again. But there are so many more that I love!

When Harry Met Sally is always good for a laugh.
Beverly Hills Cop - it's good to see the bad guys get their just desserts.

on
Demmi, Romania

At first thought, I would mention all of Tarantino's films,
Then I can flip a coin :( ...the list is very, very long :) and it also includes your movies mentioned above - and because it's December, all kinds of movies with Santa!

So nice topic to read and watch over and over again!

If you’re talking about rewatching a movie 10 or more times then it would be Forrest Gump, Scent of a Woman, Back to the Future. All of these films inspire me to do fun challenging things. There are many more of course.

The Sandlot is one of our family's favorites and a really old one is What About Bob. Loved looking through the comments, as it gives me some ideas to watch a few I have never seen. Signed, Cold in Montana today!

"Gifted", about a small girl whose uncle gave up his career to raise her with love, not just focused on her genius.
"The Holiday"--a rom-com that takes place at Christmas but is not a holiday film.
"Finding Forrester", "August Rush"

That would have to be Young Frankenstein! I also like Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Airplane! The jokes are corny but it still makes me laugh, 1980. Also, The Color Purple with Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Margaret Avery and Rae Dawn Chong from around 1985 and Bohemian Rhapsody from 2018. ‘Kind of “dates me”, oh well.

I love dance movies like Dirty Dancing and the Step Up series, and at Christmas time, Christmas romance movies.

on
chamekke, Canada

Animation: the Studio Ghibli films I love most are all by Isao Takahata. He idirected such diverse films as "Only Yesterday", "Pom Poko", "Grave of the Fireflies" and "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya". It's impossible to choose a single one out of these!

But actually my favourite movie overall is "Housekeeping" (1987), starring a young Christine Lahti. This film, about two orphaned sisters who find themselves under the care of a vagrant aunt, is indescribably beautiful and haunting. Roger Ebert said of it, "At the end of the film, I was quietly astonished", and that's how I feel about it too.

My favorite holiday movie I must watch every year as I love every single aspect of it. It's from the Jason Robards/Addie movies, the first of them: "The House Without A Christmas Tree".

on
PaiviM, Finland

On of my favorite director is Mike Leigh and out of his movies I like most Mr Turner beause I also am interested in art and the main actor is excellent. Soon 20 years I have kept notebooks of the movies I have seen - write a short description about the story and rate the movie. I started to do that when I noticed that not always could I remember if I had already seen the movie or not and if I liked it. Now I am on my 10th notebook. I like new Japanese films and also many Finnish films (but not especially Kaurismäki ones which seem to be quite appreciated aboard).

It is always hard to pick just one so…
To Kill A Mockingbird with Gregory Peck. A classic story by Harper Lee, important messages valuable for us all :
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view….Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. “

Radio Flyer, a little known movie about two brothers surviving an abusive step father, featuring a beautiful German Shepherd dog that protects the boys. Narrated at times by Tom Hanks.

Best TV series, The Detectorist, created by Mackenzie Crook. A feel good series.
The Sopranos, no reason needed. Just good and bad behaviors abound.

I love Pixar films - Up, Toy Story (1 & 3), Coco, Inside Out, Monsters, A Bug's Life is very underrated in my opinion.
I am also an Aardman fan! Wallace and Gromit are great, The Wrong Trousers and its sequel Vengeance Most Fowl being my favorites there.
Any quality animation really is my thing, I'm also into How to Train Your Dragon, for example
A unique one to see if you haven't is Loving Vincent - it is animated entirely from paintings in the style of its subject, Van Gogh

What a difficult choice this one is for me...
If we are talking about Christmas related films, I will have to mention The Sound of Music - because I watch it a lot at this time of the year - and Love Actually.
Other than that: The Dead Poets Society, Before Sunrise (all the Before), Amelie, Edward Scissor Hands, Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, American X...
This is a very difficult topic to discuss...

As for me, the movies that I would love to watch again and again is The Truman Show. I love the movie so much that I couldn't figure how much I have seen the movie. It has it own philosophy, together with the beautifulness of one's life, the values....every bit of the movies seems so perfect.

I recently watched the Interstellar Movie back in the cinema.
There are movies intended to be watched in cinemas, which don't quite work when you watch them everywhere else.

on
wkolev, United States of America

Every year, we watch the Muppet Christmas Carol and The Grinch (original cartoon). We started this tradition with our sons when they were little, sitting on the bed of a pull-out couch with bowls of popcorn. My husband and I still watch them together every year, and if we know one or both of our sons will be home for the holiday, we wait and watch when the families are together. I also love Four Christmases. One of my favorite movies to watch over and over is Pretty Woman.

on

“The Usual Suspects” still blows me away no matter how many times I watch it.
I also love “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “The Towering Inferno,” and “12 Angry Men.”
And when it comes to Studio Ghibli, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Spirited Away” are my favorites.

on

In Number one position it has to be " Bridges of Madison County " Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, I've watched it countless times and it's a wonderful film, simply wonderful. I will also mention " Summer of 42 " 1971 Michael Legrand's coming of age movie with Jennifer O'Neill. The soundtrack simply blew me away..... there are many more, too numerous to mention, but those two films stay in my heart ! I'm surprised neither has had a mention here yet, but i guess I'm just that kind of age .......

Oh, there are so many good movies that I have to pick those that make me feel good: The Lord of The Rings, Star Wars New Hope (episode 4), Gone With The Wind, Love Actually, Rio Bravo (the old western with John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson), Out of Africa, The Hound of The Baskervilles (with Basil Rathbone), Robin Hood (the Disney animated version), Totoro (a Miyazaki film) and Pride and Prejudice. I'm quite sure I have forgotten a few. And then there are films I like but that are not exactly the feel-good type of films, like IT (based on Stephen King's book), The Unknown Soldier (a Finnish film), Agora, Interview With The Vampire (the 1994 version) and Indochine (with Catherine Deneuve) but fit a certain mood.

Have a few but two that stand out right now are A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983) set in the early 1940s with Darren McGavin and Peter Billingsley as the father and son. THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) has witty quotable dialogue and an all-star cast including Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant and more.See them if you can! :) 77oF/25oC overcast; grey skies with light rain and slight breeze.

The Shawshank Redemtion, by far the best movie ever, you can never watch it too many times. And the best Dutch movie is Amsterdamned, and finally after more than 35 years there's number 2 in the cinema's, so I know where I'm going to this Christmas!

Hello dear fellows, I actually like the new Dracula movie, which came out this year. It was not entirely new themed, but it had a new perspective on the classical theme, that I really enjoyed. Also the actors who portrayed the main characters are sooooo natural, they show complex emotions so well and you can really feel the moment. The yearning, the romance is on top!
A now favourite movie of mine, which I highly recommend.

So many great films! :)
I'd like to add 'In the Mood for Love' by Wong Kar Wai (and while I'm at it, try 'Chungking Express', and 'Happy Together' from the same director as well), 'Still Walking' by Koreeda Hirokazu, and when it comes to anime I am a big fan of Makoto Shinkai's work, like '5 cm Per Second' or the wonderfully rainy 'Garden of Words'...

I love every time the film Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. 102 / 5.000
Whitney's voice (when she sings) and Kevin's German voice are such a perfect match.

An exceptionally difficult question for those who love the cinema; I had to give this deep consideration. There are many films I could easily watch multiple times for a variety of reasons, some are mentioned here. While there are many Hitchcock films in the running, particularly "The Thirty-Nine Steps" and "Rear Window," I ultimately had to go with John Houston's directorial debut. A film noir based on Dashiel Hammet's 1930 novel, "The Matlese Falcon" features brilliant acting across the board, an economic and terse screenplay, and arguably Humphrey Bogart at his absolute best, playing a complex man caught between greed an honor. The groupt of villains is just outstanding as well, played by Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Mary Astor. The final scenes of this film are so intense, and it is just a joy to watch this cast come together to perform them. A well crafted film in every way, it is, indeed, just like the falcon itself, "the stuff that dreams are made of."

on

Too many but the first one coming to my mind is "Grand Budapest Hotel". Since I have watched it on flight from UK to Turkey, I am dreaming of spending a winter at such a distant hotel.

A couple of quirky comedies I love are "Defending Your Life" and "The Invention of Lying."
Defending Your Life has a very odd take on the Afterlife that is strangely appealing to me.
The Invention of Lying is a story about a world where no one can lie, and the concept of lying doesn't even exist. The people are compelled to tell the truth about things all the time. Then one man's brain short-circuits, and he can say "something that isn't," and change the world.

Science fiction has always been my all-time favorite genre. Sir Arthur C. Clarke’s books are especially fascinating many of his ideas feel less like fiction and more like predictions of the future we are living in today.
