Stories about the Postcrossing community and the postal world

Blog > And we are back!

  icon

If you have tried to access Postcrossing in the last 2 days, you might have been surprised to see that the site was down. And not only for a brief moment, but for almost 30 hours! This was probably the longest time Postcrossing was unavailable (we hated it too!).

nouvelle cuisine

But the good news is… we are back!

Unfortunately, our hosting provider had a serious technical problem that not only affected us, but also many other large websites. While they are still finishing fixing the issue, the worse seems to be over for us.

But, more important now, is that no data was lost and everything is resuming to where it was just before this outage. We do apologize for this unexpected blackout and we will be looking into ways to better protect ourselves from similar technical problems in the future.

Happy Postcrossing, everyone!

PS: Have you noticed we have already passed the 7 million postcards mark?! :D

Problems occur from time to time even with the best technology... Don't worry, we have to wait for our postcards, we know/learn what patience means !
But yes, I missed Postcrossing a lot ! Thanks to everyone for your efforts !!
Have a happy week-end...

I missed it too but I am happy that you are back - and yes, I realized that we have passed the 7 million postcards mark. It seems that it was just a little while ago when we all were happy that we had reached the 1 million mark. I think the postcrossers here are all very diligent and this is a wonderful thing. Thanks so much to Paulo and the team who cares about this site.

Yes that was the longest interruption ever! Scary stuff for sure...I was checking at least every half hour in my waking hours! I felt that empty feeling like way back when I quit smoking! I am addicted to Postcrossing and so happy it is back! Thankyou so much to all who worked to bring it back!

A, glad postcrossing is back and great work by you. B, Great work by the administrators and engineers, they have probably their worst easter "holiday" ever. So a big applause for them. C, We are living in a complex world and the more complex our systems get the more system-intrinsic failure potential they have. We should get used to it. (Malcolm Gladwell wrote a fantastic article about that.) D, I was right there when we hit 7 million. I actually had my screen showing me 6.999.999 postcards received! Should've made a screenshot.

Enjoy Easter, hopefully free of anymore technology troubles.

Greetings from Leipzig, Germany.

Thanks for posting the link to the news story. I had no idea that happened, and that article was interesting. I didn't know that's how it worked for you. :) I learn something new every day. Glad you're ok and nothing was lost. Whew! :)

Great that Postcrossing is back in the air again. I must admit that I've got addicted to Postcrossing. It's a great hobby. And I was a bit scared that I wouldn't be able to register the cards I knew would arrive today. But I was happy that I was able to register them right away.
It's fantastic that we now have passed the 7 million cards. Wow.
Happy Easter and Postcrossing to every one.
Greetings from Little Denmark.

Very Happy you are back up and running again! I am addicted and had to try just about every hour. I had 2 postcards come to my mailbox during those 30 hours and I felt bad that I couldn't "receive" them right away.

I was worried too, so much so that I became a financial supporter as soon as the site came back up! Thought, maybe they need finances to purchase new servers - HA! Postcrossing is amazing and I'd hate to see it go down for good - Heaven forbid!!

I hate that feeling... you try to get into a favorite website, and you get NOTHING! Is everything OK? Will it come back?? What if it doesn't????

on
booboo_babies, United States of America

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who was concerned about the site being down. Years ago, I was involved with an art-related site that went down and stayed down for six months. I checked the site's forum for the first six weeks, and was surprised to see that no one was in a hurry to get the site back up. After that, I never had anything to do with the site again, even after they were up and running.

I need to make a donation to help in situations like this. I never knew how much I like Postcrossing until it went down. Absence does make the heart grow fonder!

on

welcome back!
I think you can back up the data(though it's huge) regularly to avoid the unexpected lost caused by the hosting provider.

Best wishes

Don't let it happen again. You don't know how much you need something until a Web site goes down. I started to panic. Maybe next time you can Tweet more about the status. No site is one thing, but no updates is nerve racking. As soon as my checking account is in the positive again, I will donate. I don't think I have the right to complain unless I have a vested interest.
Positive Note: 7 Million! Wow.
