The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcards’ messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!
This month’s prompt is a suggestion that I found myself pondering—have you ever daydreamed about going to the Olympics? It was never a dream I was interested in, because I was really no good at sport except maybe rounders.
For me, if I was being realistic, obviously I’d get nowhere near the Olympics at all. Even as a kid I wasn’t really into any sports that could’ve led in that direction. I wasn’t a bad sprinter, and I was pretty speedy on my bike, but I didn’t pursue either of those in any kind of structured way.
If I could wish myself into some aptitude and just pick a sport that I think looks cool, I’d have to head to the Winter Olympics and go with figure skating, though! I was always mesmerised by that as a kid, and in my teens/early twenties I had an online friend who was obsessed with skaters like Johnny Weir (I remember his exhibition skate to Lady Gaga’s Poker Face very well!).
Of course it’s not realistic—I think I’ve only ever been skating three times in total! So now it’s over to you: what sport would you do in the Olympics? Do we have any actual Olympians on Postcrossing? We’d love to hear from you, on your postcards this month or in the comments!

Badminton. I still love to play it.
10K running with Chariots of Fire music in the background. LOL
Long distance swimming. I am not a sprinter more a "diesel"-type. 🏊🏻
Not me, but my son was definitely on the pathway for the Olympics as he was twice British champion in Ice Dance (for his age group). He decided to stop when he wanted to focus on getting to Uni and now has a completely different career in computing.
Some people I know have been to the Deaflympics, but we're a relatively small community so I think every deaf person knows someone who competed in the Deaflympics haha. If I could compete I would play Badminton :-D
I have always enjoyed a little jog, maybe cross country...is that in the Olympics? :D
As a kid I was always most enthralled with ice skating and gymnastics and sometimes tried to visualize myself doing both. As I look at a list of Winter Olympic sports, I think Curling would be fun. Looking at the summer games, maybe Archery? The one time in my life I got to try using a bow and arrow, I did enjoy it. :-)
If worrying was an Olympic sport, I'd be a 10x Olympic champion. ;)
I love watching figure skating. My dream is to go the opening ceremonies.
I live in near LA ....so maybe 2028 will be my year.
I'm a big ice hockey fan and love to follow players from my state college program! This past Olympics 5 of the current women's players went (4 to USA, one for Czechia). I went to the NCAA (college) national championships and there were many more spectators after the visibility of the Olympics brought in more fans, which is great!
Gymnastics. I use to help friends in high school cheerleading tryouts learn cartwheels, tumbling, splits and jumps🤸♀️
I'm so unathletic, me in the Olympics? Not even in a parallel universe! 😂 If I’m taking part in the Olympics, I want to work as an event official.
If walking was an Olympic sport! Then this the one....
I keep dreaming, OK....
Track and field. I would be in the marathon.
I always loved the idea of being a figure skater, but having a balance disability made it not possible to learn! So beautiful to watch though!
I always enjoy changes and different happenings so I could imagine training for heptathlon could be interesting. That really requires lot of skills which I as a senior citizen do not have any longer or never had had :) But dreaming is allowed and I very much enjoy watching Olympics.
If I ever go to the Olympics I like to visit the opening ceremonies, flagparade and the complete show! Or to participate in this.
My favourite is the opening show of Olympics Sydney Australia 2000.
200 in track!!!
I'm not disciplined enough to do sports and make it to the Olympics, but if I were, I would choose figure skating or rhythmic gymnastics.
I love watching figure skating. I'm proud of my eldest daughter. She won silver at the 2005 European Junior Road Cycling Championships. She now coaches children.
Backstroke swimming ❤️ Was #1 in school, before health issues hit me.
If I could actually go to the Olympics one day and watch the games instead on TV I would call that a win! :)
If leaving compliments were an Olympic sport I'd compete in that. Hey thanks for reading this far down, that's a persistent postcrosser, you.
In the marathon, absolutely!!!
I ran x-country in high school and was on the Commanders cup team in the Army. X-Country Was an Olympic event from 1912-24 and from what I read it will never be an Olympic event ever again if the officials have there way.
Bicycling, because at times I needed a means of transportation and not enough money for a car. Now I have over 50 bicycles. #2 Fencing, because when I was working part time at Harvard University there was a fencing group at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School A few hours before my shift on Sunday afternoon.
swimming could be a good Olympic activity and it would be good in this heat
Football, Rugby in VII and Badminton for me.
TENNIS 🎾
I love watching most of the sports, but I am not very good at doing sports. My mother has teased me for many years now that she keeps watching expecting to see me on the Luge. Crazy woman!
When I was little I dreamt of being a figure skater ❀⛸️
As a child, I used to think about being a figure skater in the Olympics. Now as an adult I would love to do Archery.
