Blog > April Writing Prompt: Best holiday destinations in your country

  icon

The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcards’ messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!

Here in the UK, the days are getting bright and sunny, there’s warmth (and pollen) in the air, and people are beginning to plan their summer holidays. Given that, and the fact that I keep telling you how lovely Wales is, I thought it would be a good time for this prompt…

In April, write about the best place to spend some holidays in your country, and what makes it great.
A view from the battlements of Cardiff Castle, showing the inner courtyard, and in the background the city centre, showing that Cardiff Castle is really in the centre of everything

My family all come from the Cardiff/Caerphilly area, and I went to university in Cardiff, so you’re not going to be surprised when I recommend Cardiff. If you’re into shopping, it has a compact city centre that’s easy to walk around, with lots of “arcades” which contain smaller (often independent) shops of all types, and an indoor market. While you’re in the market, you might like to pick up some Welsh cakes to try from Cardiff Bakestones. Once you’ve nibbled one of those (preferably fresh and warm), then if you love books, don’t miss a little detour into the arcades to find Troutmark Books, a second-hand bookshop that I love and which kept me stocked up on books throughout my time as a student. And while you’re in the city centre, there are plenty of places to get postcards, don’t worry!

If tourist attractions are more your thing, Cardiff is a great base camp for visiting them. You can start with Cardiff Castle, right in the city centre—give yourself some time to catch a tour and hear all about it, and don’t forget to look up: some of the ceilings are absolutely astounding. There’s also the National Museum in Cardiff itself, which combines art and natural history. However, my favourite museum experience is St Fagan’s, which is full of old buildings and reconstructions that give you a glimpse at Wales through the ages. My most recent trip was on a “ghost walk”, which was a pretty fascinating way to explore, but if you do that then I recommend going back during the day to see how it looks in the light as well! It’s worth the time.

You’re also within easy travelling distance of Caerphilly, if you want to visit Caerphilly Castle and learn about the history and conflicts of the area, and Castell Coch, which I’ve always loved best and is absolutely beautiful.

And if you’re more the walking and hiking sort, the Brecon Beacons National Park might suit you… But by this point, I hope I have folks convinced! Is there somewhere in your country that you love like I love Cardiff? Tell us about it, on your postcards this month and in the comments!

I think Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, and Bryce Canyon in Utah, USA are beautiful wonders, hard to experience anywhere else on Earth.

Florida is noted for its beautiful beaches, white sand and warm water. We have some great state parks if you like a walk among trees with hanging Spanish Moss, kayak our rivers, visit the springs, see all sorts of marine life. Of course there is always the theme parks in Orlando, Disney and Universal Studios or Busch Gardens in Tampa or Lego Land in Winter Haven. Just be prepared for the heat.

WURTSBORO as I like to tell everyone is the only Wurtsboro in the world and who wouldn’t want to report back to friends and family I’ve been to “one of a kind”. In our 1 stoplight town we have an Indian vegan, a Mexican ,an Italian and all American restaurant. Also a Greek diner, Chinese takeout and two pizza parlors! The Canal Towne Emporium has unique handcrafted gifts of every kind. The paths along the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) canal offer easy pleasant hikes and our wetland, the Bashakill, has eagle/ osprey siting scopes available in spring, a waterfall and winery. Perhaps I could get O’Toole’s Harley Davidson’s motorcycle shop to rent out bikes for a rip-roaring ride to Ellenville in order to visit fantastic vistas around Ice Cave Mountain or to get in some hang gliding. I can go on , but I want to end with the best of all- me. I’ll make myself postcrossers’ guide and thereby get to meet some of you in postcrossing land. Think about it.😃

It is worth coming to Romania and I suggest you choose Bucovina - a wonderful place, the Danube Delta - a wonderful experience, and for urban vacations - the cities of Timisoara, Brasov, Sibiu, Iasi, Oradea and of course Bucharest where the old center is an explosion of good energy. The prices are affordable and the people are very, very welcoming.

Many people who come to Portugal visit the Algarve, Porto, Lisbon, and perhaps some of our capital's neighborhoods, like Sintra, Cascais, or Óbidos. However, Portugal has much more to offer, including the Douro Valley, the Alentejo, the Azorean Islands, and, of course, Madeira Island, which is also very well-known among tourists.

Canada has no shortage of beautiful places to visit, from oceanside towns, through rainforests, Rocky Mountains, wide open plains, and lakesides... Those who love nature and those who prefer a city-vacation can find lots to do here. Many are planning to vacation more locally this year, so it's a perfect opportunity to hang out with the locals. There's no shortage of places to camp, hotels, etc. If you're ok with driving, just rent a car/camper and enjoy a beautiful road trip, or pick a city to stay in and have fun! Gulf Islands, Whistler, Banff, Drumheller, Old Quebec... just a couple of the most popular places, but of course there's so much to see outside the typical tourist spots.

I live of Vancouver Island and this Island is a Holiday destination it self! Victoria is the Capital of BC and is right on the Inner Harbour with the Parliament Buildings and famous Empress Hotel.
Victoria is a cruise ship destination. In the summer we have double population walking around.
Our climate is great in every season, this attracted a lot of visitors from all over the world.
So please, come and enjoy where I live.

I live in Rome, Italy: here there are countless places to spend your holidays, whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter.
In Rome, it is really nice to live from September to June, but also in July and August you can go to the sea, without changing cities: yes, in Rome we also have beaches, where if you are lucky you can also see turtles laying their eggs!
Around Rome there are also lakes (Albano, Nemi, Bracciano) with a thousand-year history, with important remains of History (as Rome, after all, is full of them)
If instead you prefer the mountains, just 80 kilometers away you can climb above 2,000 meters above sea level.
Up to this point I have limited myself to describing Rome and its surroundings, but broadening the horizon to the whole of Italy, starting from nearby Tuscany up to the Dolomites and the islands of southern Italy, the places where you can spend unforgettable holidays are truly countless!
Happy holidays to everyone from Rome, Italy

Nice idea.I like it.

Germany has problems with overtourism too.
So I think it is better for nature protection and social stability here to reported from Germany nothing.

Alaska is great for viewing the Aurora Borealis. Lota of folks visit here for that experience. As a place with lots of wilderness, I love getting out into the mountains to hike or bike. It is wonderful to see Nature still in a very natural untouched state.

Wales is definitely a gorgeous place where I love the most in UK. I remember cute dragon sculptures in Caerphilly, the fresh lobster I ate in Penarth, and Barry's island. Oh, and I remember there's a small town with the longest name in the world in North Wales. I hope I have time to visit Wales again!

Wow. As far as my previous experiences from tourist places within Germany, you can google for example Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Heidelberg, Schloss Hohenlohe, or Bad Kissingen. Some parking lots get more & more crowded here, however, which is a pity, so if you come by car, you have to turn circles and circles again to get your car finally parked somewhere. Train stations are better, in some cases. I will go on exploring nevertheless, it's worth it.

Thanks for the good topic!

Brazil is a very big country, a melting pot of cultures and lots of climates and biomas... some people love the stunning beaches, some love exploring the Amazon and other forests, some love the cold Winter days in southern mountains... me? I love exploring historical cities as Paraty, Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Goiás, Diamantina, Salvador, Recife, Olinda and many others... the atmosphere there is unique!

Surely Cappadocia. It is famous for its fairy, chimneys, which are historical residences once occupied by various collectivities ranging from Hitites to early Christians of Anatolia. Fairy Chimneys are exactly a specific type of volcanic rock formation making the area a fabulous place.

Many people already know a lot about our Florida beaches, etc. However, we have so much more. In Tampa (my home) you can go to an area called Ybor City to learn about cigar-making at the turn of the last century. Also, they just opened the Saunders Planetarium and Digital Dome Theatre at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). It is the second largest in the US. St. Petersburg is a great place to visit if you are into art (Chihuly Glass Museum, Dali Museum, etc.). St. Augustine, which is north of us, is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States (founded 1565).

Hello .. I live in Belgium and it's such a pity that tourists visiting the beautiful Unesco town of Brugge don't take a look around the Damse Vaart ( a small canal ) from Brugge to Damme ( ... best by foot or bike ! ) ... and the lovely town of Damme or go there for an outside seating lunch or just taking pictures ! .... in April on Sunday 13th they have a run along the canal ( if someone is there now ! ) .... for more info see : dammebruggedamme.com

If you are not air-tight on your paperwork, maybe rethink a trip to the US from overseas at this time.....but if you are traveling domestically and feel safe doing so, I would recommend my Pacific NW region - - the San Juan Islands are absolutely peaceful and beautiful, especially in the summer (though you will need to make reservations for the ferries and lodging in advance). See orcas from a respectable distance - but still hear them breathing! Ahhhh it is something you will never forget! - - Jenny

PaiviM, Finland

In Finland there are many places where you can enjoy nature, quiet and peace: forests, lakes, seaside, archipelago, Lapland sceneries. Depending on the season of the year you can ski or skate or swim or hike or pick berries and mushrooms. If you prefer citylife all Finnish cities are quite small and organized. You can visit Helsinki, Turku, Tampere or Kuopio - my favorites!

Very interesting ... I can see why you love it there.
Visit the Columbia River Gorge bordering Washington, USA, and Oregon, USA, for wind surfing, boating, hiking, waterfalls, and enjoy the salmon and fruit.

Kansas City and surrounding suburbs are nice places to visit. KC has great barbeque, cowboy and mafia history, and plenty of parks, lakes and rivers.

Thank you for the info on your area.
