Blog > Going on holidays soon?

Aaaaaaah… June is here at last! 😍 This is the start of the holiday season in the northern hemisphere, when school is out for the summer and many families are packing for their yearly vacations. So it’s time for our regularly scheduled post to remind everyone that the Inactive Status and the new Travel Mode are here to help!

Going on holidays?

If you know you’re going to be away from your address for a while or simply need a break from Postcrossing, we recommend that you switch your account to inactive a few weeks in advance. You can still send postcards if you’d like, but you won’t be sent any until you’re ready to receive them.

In addition to using the Inactive state, if you’re going on holidays somewhere and would like to send postcards from that location, then the Travel Mode is for you! Just set it on for your destination, connect to a local internet connection when you get there, grab some local postcards and stamps, and enjoy sending postcards with the right Postcard IDs, maps and statistics.

While you’re using either of these modes (which you can easily switch on and off on your Account Settings), Postcrossing does not to give your address to other members. Don’t worry though — we’ll still keep track of all your due postcards, and send them all to you when you’re home again and your account is back to active.

Got questions? Feel free to reach out on the comments or through the forum — as always, we’re here to help.

Enjoy your holidays!

I used this last year and even sent three postcards from where I travelled. I liked this travel mode option.

Travelmode is great! I sent 5 cards from Costa Rica last month, 2 have reached their destination and the other 3 are still on its way!

Wish there was a possibility to give region instead of specific city in Travel Mode. What if one decides to go on tour?

@Tufta We need a city to draw a point in the maps... but you can update the travel mode as you move from one place to the next — it's not a problem!

really like using the travel mode! earlier this year i sent a bunch of postcards from Iran, Jordan and Germany. went to Lebanon recently, sent 22 postcards from there which hopefully will reach their destinations soon!

Sent 2 cards from Colombia in April, still travelling... But the other cards I sent (through the forum) start to arrive.

@minemi Nice! If all those postcards you've sent from Lebanon arrive, you'll be increasing that country's (sent) numbers in 2% — good job!

I love the Travel Mode option and used when I was in Scotland and then in England 😁

I've sent 24 cards from Bonaire last month, loved it!

@Petre A 7% increase in that country's sent numbers, if they all arrive — brilliant!

I really enjoyed Travel Mode while being in Portugal last month - will use it again whenever I travel to another country.

The holidays have just ended in my country. Hello to unexpected class cancellations caused by monsoons and typhoons.

Btw, I enjoy Travel Mode very much. When I travel abroad, I now look forward to using travel mode to send postcards. Visiting different post offices around the world provides me with insights on other countries' culture and government.

I've sent from Hong Kong, China, Japan, and South Africa. So far the receivers received the postcards I sent them (except for two I sent from South Africa last April).

I like using the travel mode too. In May I sent 19 cards from Luxembourg - 13 arrived and 6 are still on the way to Russia and Taiwan.

This is very confusing. You're telling us to set it to both "travel mode" AND "inactive" mode. Which do we use and what is the difference between the two? I'll be traveling for a month come August and I want to be sure I can still send some while away.

Ana, thank you for the Travel Mode reminder! You should also mention it in the monthly stats mail, in my opinion. Anyway, this was my favourite new feature for ages! Obrigado!

@PostcardsFromCLE: it's not so confusing. Whether you are on Inactive or Travel Mode, you can always send postcards without receiving any until you are active again. The Travel Mode gives you the additional chance to send postcards from your holiday destination with the local ID if you are traveling abroad, or with matching statistics if you are elsewhere in the States.

"a break from Postcrossing"?? No way! :D Holidays are the best time to send postcards and Travel Mode is the best invention since Postcrossing was born! Thank you (again) for it and Happy Holidays, everyone!!! :)

Recently I used Travel Mode in Germany! I stamped cards with a Snoopy stamp, it made me happy to use this stamp.

If Travel Mode was not implemented I would certainly slow down in summer. But not now, I hope to receive some rare countries. I wonder how many postcrossers manage to sent cards from Vatican City State. I have seen the first cards sent in Travel Mode from dwarfstates San Marino and Liechtenstein.

In the past I have sent from more exotic places then Germany. And hopefully in the future again.

Edit: dwarfstate is microstate or micronation

Travel Mode and Inactive Status are great inventions. I would also like to request that fellow Postcrossers please advise when simply moving to a new permanent home. I'm guessing some of the expired cards out there exist because people move (sometimes often) and forget to create updated changes of address on their profile. Thanks!

I've used the travel mode in Texas in february and since then I've also been using it within Germany (and I am right now) to keep the travel route on the map updated while in other German cities. It's such a great feature!

I love Travel Mode. I have sent over 100 cards from 12 different countries on my travels with more to come in the next few months.

I too love Travel Mode. I already sent some postcards from Belgium and Turkey earlier this year. But I also use Travel Mode within Germany - even if I only travel for one day. It is such a wonderful feature.

I love travel mode! I used travel mode during my travelling around the Europe during this year - Slovenia, Croatia, Poland, Hungary, and Georgia. For nonstop travellers it's great thing! :)
