Blog > May Writing Prompt: dream holiday

  icon

The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcards’ messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!

Right now, we know that most postcrossers are stuck at home, and postcards are helping everyone travel during quarantine restrictions and lockdown… so this month, we thought it might be nice to chat about our dream holidays—whether that involves traveling or not! This topic was suggested by canchita on the forum.

In May, write about your dream holiday.

I’m a little bit of a homebody. My longest journeys are all fictional: to Fairyland, Middle-Earth, Mars, Eorzea, the past and the future. When I do travel, my first thought is to look up whether our destination has a good bookshop. There are a few locations on my holiday list solely because I’ve heard good things about a bookshop or two, like St. Georges in Berlin, and the Globe Bookstore and Café in Prague.

Museum für Naturkunde

That said, I can also go for a good museum, and I’ve been recommended the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin: I’m curious about their mounted Brachiosaurus skeleton, and they actually house the first ever Archaeopterix fossil as well! Maybe we’ve got our answer here: it’s starting to sound like my ideal holiday is to Berlin, someday, when everything’s safe.

We’d love to hear more about your ideal holiday, whether it involves soaking up some sun or climbing a tricky mountain… or just figuring out how many books you can fit in your suitcase on the way home. You can share in the comments here, and on the cards you send this month!

Every place can be a dream holiday destination when we perceive it with new eyes.

I am happy to explore my local community of Vancouver, Canada until the pandemic breaks and it is safe to travel again.

Lovely writing prompt this month!

My dream holiday would be to visit the most beautiful gardens and green spaces of the world, from formal rose gardens to wild tangles of plants on islands and clifftops. I also love courtyard gardens in cities. 💚

When I travel the first thing I research is, flea markets and antique shops, thrifts stores, bookstores, and re-use stores. Secondly, restaurants.
I also gravitate toward old film houses or movies in general.
If its a coastal town, my favorite activity is dining with a view. then watching the sunset.
If its a mountain get-a-way, I love the aromas of fires burning in the fireplaces and morning bacon. I love going on walks, and love love love castles and green countrysides. I love shopping in cheese and charcuterie shops. If there is an art store, Boom!!!! I can spend hours!!!!
My dream is to travel to Europe, spend a month in each country and savor the culture, make friends, and collect postcards to write back to those friends Ive made.

Sightseeing in interesting towns again - not necessarily so far away, maybe in our neighbour countries or even in other parts of Germany. That's what I'm dreaming of. Testing the restaurants, the "gelaterie", see how people live, their gardens, having the adventure of travelling by metro or bus and being proud to really arrive at the place planned before. And staying in a hotel room with a nice breakfast being served in the morning after having had a bath in the swimming pool.
I am sure - this MUST be possible again, soon!

One of my best holidays was in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina, USA. For a week I enjoyed cool weather in the summer, hikes, and quiet. During that time I did not hear an airplane, train, loud truck, loud motorcycle, or emergency sirens. My dream holiday is to have the same experience, but this time some mountainous place in Europe that I have not visited yet.

What a wonderful writing prompt once again! Yeah, I know, I'm really repeating myself here but...this topic just gets my juices flowing ;)

As I'm a small town girl, I greatly enjoy city vacations. Even though I'm mostly an introvert who prefers somewhat of a simple lifestyle, I crave stimulation every now and then. When it comes to holidays, my dream destination would be the ultimate metropolis adventure: New York City.

Of course it helps that I speak English as my second language and I'm familiar with taking all sorts of public transport. But I also think NYC is so much more than that. For example, I love modern & contemporary art and the Big Apple seems to be the perfect place for that. There's the Museum of Modern Art, the MoMA P.S.1 in Queens and the New Museum located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I love spicy, authentic food which Queens in particular seems to cater to. I also enjoy the greenery that both Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx have in the form of Central Park, Prospect Park and Pelham Bay Park respectively. Given that I'm also a somewhat "intellectual" person, I'd love to attend a possible public lecture at the Columbia University in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. There would be so much to see and do I'm not going to cover here because, I can't!

Looking forward to read your thoughts!

My dream right now is to visit my very best friend who lives in Munich, Germany :) I have not seen her in 2 years, and I was going to visit her for a month in 2020 but the trip had to be canceled because of the Corona Virus. But I hope to be able to travel to Germany again soon to see her!

Snorkeling in Bonaire...buying fresh fish from the fishermen next door, listening to jazz at “It Rains Fishes” during happy hour, perusing all the interesting items at the grocery store. Blissful!

My Perfect Dream Vacation: There's No Place Like Home Almost everyone has their own idea of a dream vacation. It's the perfect place to get away from the reality of everyday life and the stress that goes along with it, and the choices and ideas of the “perfect vacation” are as varied as the people who dream about them. Some fantasize about lazing on a warm, sunny beach with soft ocean breezes and a cold exotic drink at their side. But I love to visit the landmarks and antiquities, ruins, relics and museums.

Ireland and Wales for 2020 was cancelled, 2021 again its not on the horizon. Last year we explored parts of the west coast of Canada that we haven't seen yet!!!! We still can't go to USA via car so it looks like its another explore BC vacation. Have booked a wilderness canoe trip of 7-10 days with my brother and buddies, always planning on doing it in my younger days but never got around to doing it!
My wife and I will then hit places that we haven't seen yet, pick up some more unique post cards while were are RV traveling (all are subject to covid restrictions). I expect it will be the Rocky mountains, always beautiful in the fall.
Future dream trips are NZ, South Africa, Australia, Haida Gwaii, the Baltic countries, RVing to Florida from Vancouver, Camino de Santiago, Ireland and Wales Pembrokshire coastal hike. Those are the travel dreams but there are also other dreams like overnight hikes with my 20 something children or all dayers. Lucky us we got so many choices here! The mountains and ocean are so close!!!

So many wonderful countries I'd love to visit, but actually for a great holiday you can't beat Wales. There is so much variety: amazing scenery, beautiful mountains, stunning beaches, buzzing cities like Cardiff and tiny villages and towns each with their own atmosphere, like Hay-on-Wye, the town of books. Fantastic castles, so much history and culture, even its own language. However many times you visit you'd never be bored!

An acquaintance of mine has talked to me of Iceland, how beautiful the landscapes are over there, and also the people. I'd love to go there with her. But what I'd really love to do is meet my pen-pals (through Postcrossing) in Germany, The Netherlands, and Canada, in winter. You see, I have never touched snow, nor seen it fall or played in it. Can't think of a better vacation than meeting my pals in person, in a northern hemisphere winter.

Bienvenue. (A dream)

Wait to visit Paris again.
Will you be there at Montparnasse?
Hear Saint Saëns at la Madeleine.
Want to visit Paris again.
Write triolets along the Seine,
The first kiss might not be the last.
Want to visit Paris again.
Will you be there?  At Montparnasse?

I love traveling and my dream destination are European countries. I've never been to Europe. Reading books, seeing photos/paintings about Europe are really peaceful and romantic. I've never been to America too but my top wish is always Europe. But now my top wish is ending Covid so that we can be back to traveling hobbies like before. :)

Presently, I am dreaming of other places through the lovely postcards I receive from Postcrossers.
I joined because travel is restricted. And it was a good decision. Satisfies my wanderlust ...

If I could only ever go to one place it would be Antarctica. That would be my dream destination. Hopefully someday . . . . . . . . . . 🤞🤞🤞
It the meantime, travelling to anywhere via my postcards sent and received is wonderful. It keeps us connected to the whole world 🌍🌎🌏

My dream of holiday would be sitting somewhere on a beach, listening to the sound of waves and seagulls, with a book, a (virgin) cocktail and enjoy a lovely sunset. Does not have to be far, our own coastline would do for now...
Big dream for somewhere in the future would be a foto-safari to the nationalparks of Africa, but you know.... money....

My dream trip is visiting Nigata, the beautiful northern Japan. Atmosphere, nature, people, food, everything great, especially Sake alcohol is sooo dangerous. LOL
It's domestic but far away from my region. No direct flight.

The pandemic has taught me to travel at home. With eyes open wide, explore local parks and conservation areas of New England. Look at them as though I came from the arid west, and marvel at the diversity of life around me. Walking, listening to birds, relaxing near ponds or streams. It's a new sort of Vacation At Home, and it's wonderful.
