Blog > July Writing Prompt: Sweet, salty or sour?

  Posted on

The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcards’ messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!

This month’s writing prompt about flavours! Different countries have different cuisines and can shape different preferences, or at least that’s what I’ve heard! I wonder if it’s true. So if you’re not sure what to write on your postcards this month, how about this?

In July, write about which you prefer: sweet, salty or sour?

I’m going to cop out straight away: I like all of them! It really depends on my mood. I pretty much alternate between sweet and salty when it comes to snacks, I suppose: my usual choice would be between something sweet like chocolate or a biscuit, or something salty like salted popcorn or maybe crisps (AKA potato chips in some countries) or tortilla chips.

That said, I’d also never say no to a sour treat like Haribo Tangfastics or sour Skittles

Though I do like all three, I suppose I could rank them, and I thiiink it’s probably sweet > salty > sour… or maybe sweet = salty > sour. But I wouldn’t like to lose any of those options, haha! I don’t know if this was shaped by being British: growing up we ate Indian and Chinese food as well (or at least British-friendly versions of those, since I know the recipes are often adapted in the UK!), and I’ve developed a love of Mexican food as an adult… but I’m definitely curious if other people rank things differently and think that’s due to what they ate growing up!

Alright, now it’s your turn: what do you prefer? And do you think that’s influenced by the cuisine/s you grew up with? Feel free to answer in the comments if you like, but you can also use this prompt to help you fill out that blank space if you’re not sure what to write on your postcards this month.

I do prefer salty in my childhood but now sour(especially sour with spicy), never sweet!
In my place, if sweet food tastes not so much sweet, it'll win the highest prize of the sweet food.🤣🤣And the standard for all the sweet flavor food is that too!
We some actually have bitter flavor fetish in summer coz it helps to our appetite awake from these hot days. 🤪

I like salty and sour foods, I don't like food that's too salty or too sour. But sweet some times I eat just little, and not so much sweet.

Salty is my favorite, but I love some of the new combos such as Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili chips.

I love all three depending on the mood of my taste buds.....sour patch kids I love whenever the grandchildren are in the mood to share. I also love Mike's Hot Honey on just about everything. I use salt sparingly.

I prefer sweet if I am going to celebrate something (birthday, success, overcoming a tough situation)! But I can enjoy salt or sour in moderation in normal casual meals. :)

Sweet, salty, sour - I love them all! And I also have a penchant for sour Skittles! :)

I love all - but my favorite is salty!

I can’t choose, love them all. But what comes to my mind first are the tastes of salted caramel and salted chocolate. And the sour taste of ‘Bonbon Napoleon’ . (A kind of candy)

For snacks, sweet, sour, and salty are all good but I need the right texture! Haribo golden bears hit the spot like no other.

I love chocolate chili pudding.

I love all three of them. The sweetness from a great doughnut, the saltiness from black liquors and the sourness from lemons....mmmmm.

Salty, sweet and sour 🤤

I really enjoy sweet and then after some time I need to get the sweet out of my mouth with salty. And then there are times when the reverse happens :)

Sour is okay in small doses.

I used to be 100% hands down a sweet girlie, but the older I get, the more I enjoy a salty snack. HOWEVER, there is nothing better than a sweet and salty bite.

My favorite pie is strawberry rhubarb
Sweet and sour 🤷‍♀️
But a potato with salt and butter beats even that for comfort food.
Our tastebuds are there to enjoy all , I believe.

Salty is definitely my favourite. Crisps, on chips, pork crackling, smoked salmon, olives, celery with salt.. probably why my blood pressure is high..

I love sweet, savoury and citrus flavours, in that order, but depending on the time, place and company, I prefer one thing or another… everything is good in its own time and in moderation. Above all, it transports me to places I’ve been to… it’s a way of travelling through the senses!!!!

Hi everyone! I enjoy both salty and sweet flavors—or sweet with a hint of salt. I have to admit I have a real sweet tooth and absolutely love good licorice, but paired with chocolate and a touch of salt or spice, it’s unbeatable!

Hi! Sweets are absolutely essential for me! Without a doubt, they are a truly important food in my life!! ❤️☺️ I don't think I could live without them!

I like sweet food the most. Eating sweet foods can relieve stress. I often feel extremely stressed, so I really enjoy eating sweet foods. I especially love chocolate.

Why choose just one? My perfect treat is an irresistible harmony of all three. I want a dessert that's luxuriously sweet and melt-in-your-mouth, kissed with a few crystals of flaky sea salt that make the sweetness bloom, and finished with a subtle burst of citrus that awakens your palate. It's that magical combination where every bite is rich, balanced, and leaves you craving just one more.

This is a good one, but I like sweet, and I like sour…. Not a fan of salty

I love sweet and nutty, followed by salty then sour.

Like them all, but if I find myself thinking about something I crave, it’s often sour like pickles, mustard, citrus fruit. And let’s not forget bitter, which can have its place too. I think bitter often elevates the other tastes, like in a really good Spritz cocktail.

I love sweet & salty, or sweet & spicy but am not generally a fan of sour.

sour!!!

I love eating something sweet, and then, after a while, something salty—and vice versa. As for sour things, the only exceptions are candies or a slice of lemon in my tea.

I like sweet and savory but it depends on how I feel. Sometimes I like savory to wash out my palette or sweet if I want dessert.

Sweet. Salty. Then sour. You know what tastes really good? Mix Jelly Beans with sour patch kids candy.

Yullie, Indonesia

I like salty mos, such as salty plum that we had when Lunar New Year arrives.

Sour is the best! I love sour>sweet>salty. Maybe my preference will change when I grow up.😁
