The writing prompts invite postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcard’s messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!

I’ve tried quite a few different cuisines in restaurants, but that’s usually a full meal. Snacks from other countries are a bit harder to come by, and I never know what to try! So… what would you recommend?

In November, write about your favourite snacks.
Welshcakes

Personally, the best snack I found in my time living in Belgium was speculoos biscuits! Especially when I could persuade my wife to go to the bakery nice and early on a weekend and get freshly made biscuits for me! Luckily, we have them in the UK too, under the name of Biscoff… but I miss the fresh ones.

When I’m feeling homesick, though, I turn to Welsh cakes. They have a variety of names in Welsh: picau ar y maen, pice bach, cacennau cri or teisennau gradell, according to Wikipedia, and they may also be known as griddle cakes or bakestones within Wales, because they’re traditionally made on a bakestone, a type of griddle. They’re made with butter, flour, eggs and milk, usually contain currants, and are spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.

My nanny (my dad’s mother) used to get them for me from the market, liberally dusted with sugar, and always deliciously light. Even better, though, is to eat them warm from the pan… You can try out a recipe here!

What about you? Do you have any favourite snacks? Can you get them in stores, or do you make them yourself? You can share your favourites in the postcards you send this month… but we’d love to hear about them in the comments as well! 😋

July is here and temperatures in most of Europe lately have been sizzling… (45°C/113°F in France! 😰) It’s way too hot to think about complicated writing topics, so this month we’re keeping it simple and suggesting a refreshing escape with an icy treat.

In July, write about your favorite ice-cream flavor!
Ice-cream!

Though super popular in the summer, ice-creams are a hit in all seasons, so whether it’s summer or winter where you are, it’s always a good time to consume one.

Among the team, our taste choices go to carob and orange for Paulo, coconut milk and corn for me, and Ben and Jerry’s fairy floss for Vicki in Australia. That Unicornetto on the right was a thing of beauty though… have you ever tasted an ice-cream made of unicorns? 🦄

So what about you, do you have a favorite ice-cream flavor? And are there perhaps some flavors that are specific to your country? We invite you to write about them on the postcards you send out this month!

April Writing Prompt: Your typical breakfast The writing prompts are an ongoing experiment that invites postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcard’s messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too.

Of all the meals in a day, breakfast has always been my favourite. When I was a kid, it was mostly because of the chocolate milk and bread with marmelada (quince cheese) combo… but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the versatility of breakfast and experimented with other variations of this meal. So I’m very happy about this month’s writing prompt suggestion by ColorfulCourtney on the forum:

In April, write about your typical breakfast.

These days, I’m all about coffee and eggs. Omelets, scrambled, fried, poached… anything goes! If we’re feeling especially hungry, I’ll do a big pan of shakshouka and pair it with orange juice from the local farmer’s market. Paulo is a fan of fluffy croissants, but those are reserved for special days! 🙂

What about you? What’s your normal breakfast, and what would you consider a treat? Write about it on your postcards this month and feel free to illustrate it with a little drawing, if you feel so inclined. 🍳

Have a delicious month!

Another month starts and it’s time for a new suggestion for the messages on your postcards! But first, let us ask: did last month’s writing prompt help you unlock some creativity and write a bit more on your postcards? We really hope so!

(For those that are new to them, the writing prompts are an ongoing experiment that invites postcrossers to write about a different topic on their postcard’s messages every month. These are just suggestions though — if you already know what you want to write about, or the recipient gives you some pointers, that’s great too!)

December’s writing prompt was suggested by Heepy on the forum. Here it goes:

In December, describe a famous food from your region.

This should be an easy one, right? Around here in the south of Portugal, the “holy trinity of crops” consists of almonds, carob and figs. Most of the local sweets will include one or more of these, giving them a very characteristic taste and texture. After extensive research, we can confirm it’s absolutely delicious! I could definitely write about it at length on my postcards… 😋

What about you, what is typical from your region? We invite you to pick a favourite local dish or sweet and tell your recipients all about it on your December postcards — you might even inspire someone across the world to try it out someday!

PS – Got some cool ideas for more prompts? Feel free to share them on this forum thread!
