Blog > Happy World Post Day!

It’s the World Post Day, did you know? It’s celebrated every year, on the 9th of October and it commemorates the founding of the UPU (Universal Postal Union) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland Capital.

So today, across the world, post offices are celebrating this special day in many different ways. This includes: special philatelic exhibitions, free entrance in postal museums, introducing new products and services, special cancellation marks, seminars, workshops and more!

Actually, in some countries you can even get free goodies (like free postage!) so be sure to check the website for the post offices of your country (hint: if you don’t know the link you can find it in your country page in Postcrossing). Let us know your findings in the comments of this post!

So, go out, buy some postcards or some nice letter paper and write to all your friends and family; remind them that the post is a very important part of our lives.

Happy World Post Day!

In Portugal there's an "happy hour" (which will actually run for 2 months) where you can get free envelopes with pre-paid postage (correio azul/verde nacional). Details at: http://tinyurl.com/yl8m6e8

Happy world post day.

However, we don't have any celebration of this great day because Taiwan is not a member of UPU.

Anyway, happy postcrossing everyday!

I knew it's UPU birthday but unfortunately I can't go to the post offices today and get a nice cancelation. Maybe in 2012 (the next 2 years the date will be celebrated during the weekend).
But 9 official cards will receive "the date"! :D

"Other activities organised by MPL to mark World Post Day 2009 comprise a philatelic exhibition with stamps depicting the fauna and flora of Namibia, free entrance for Mauritians at the Postal Museum on 9 and 10 October, talks on philately to students and school children and an ICT awareness campaign at different Post Offices in collaboration with the National Computer Board."

I have just discovered that Great Britain is a member of the UPU. I would never have guessed, because Royal Mail never celebrates either its membership of the UPU or World Post Day. We have had a new issue of stamps this Thursday, but the ten stamps show famous Britons.
