1996 was the year when I finally got my permanent residence permit for Poland. And – shame to say – when we started travelling by car. But back in those days public transport was not handicapped-accessible in Poland. Neither were people very helpful. They even scorned us when I carried my wife into a bus, thinking we were just fooling around. She could still walk back then, but she couldn’t handle the steep stairs of those Ikarus busses. My wife completed her studies that year, and I started writing my MA thesis. We both worked at a language school and had private students, and I was writing “The German Page” for a Polish youth magazine. In autumn my two older nephews – aged 10 and 8 at the time – came to visit us in Warsaw on their own. Can’t remember any world events from that year – unless you count in sports events. Football was “coming home” for the European Championship. England fans booed the German anthem, but Germany went through to grab the title :)
