1990 was the year of the Summer of Love :) Did a lot of travelling that year – to Leipzig, to Paris, to Warsaw and Gdańsk, and to Warsaw, and to Warsaw and Zakopane... In fact the first thing I always did on return to Germany was to apply for another visa for Poland. Over the two years of our long-distance love story, we have never been apart for more than nine weeks. 1990 was also the year my Grandma died – the one from Föhr Island. My Hamburg grandmother had “divorced” us kids right after my Mum had divorced her son – no idea what happened to her since, nor to my father either. In autumn I finally began my studies – half-heartedly, as I knew I could hardly be a primary school teacher in Poland. And, of course, 1990 was the year of German reunification – putting an end to all hopes for change for us in the West. |
