1980 was an election year both in West-Germany and the USA, and it was the first time I took some kind of interest in politics. In Germany, where I used to live back then, the social-liberal government prevailed one last time, and the Green Party made its first appearance. I had watched enough nature documentaries to think that was a good thing – and enough knowledge about nukes to be scared of the warmonger elected in America. Even under the old president the USA had boycotted the Moscow Olympics. The Cold War seemed to get going again. My former best friend was picking on me at school, but he still invited me for his birthday – not wanting to explain to his parents what’s going on. He actually came to ask me over once more during the party itself – and that I guess was about the last time we talked.
