1975 saw the end of the Vietnam War – not that I took notice at the age of six. In 1975 I started school, only to leave again when a few months later we moved to a bigger flat in a different part of town. It was actually us children who decided that we would move to Wilhelmsburg – a working class district wedged in between Hamburg’s harbour and the highway, on an island between two arms of the river Elbe. Beyond the highway there was actually a bit of countryside, protected from the river by dykes. And that’s what charmed us, reminding us of our grandparents’ island of Föhr. We didn’t even go to have a look at the other flat we had been offered. My first day at the new school started with a big scare. There was this resolute red-headed girl who asked our teacher if the new boy could please sit next to her... |
