KAKABEKA FALLS: Known as the Niagara of the North, drops 39 meters over sheer cliffs. Kakabeka is an aboriginal word meaning "steep cliffs". Below the falls is a dramatic gorge carved out of the Precambrian shield by melted water from the last glaciers. The ancient volcanic rock over which the water tumbles, holds many secrets. From beneath its layers, 1.6-billion-year old fossils have been unearthed. Since 1904, the river has been taped to produce a steady flow of hydro-electric power. |

KAKABEKA FALLS - Legend of the Princess of the Mist. Princess Green Mantle, Daughter of Ojibway Chieftain White Bear, led the Sioux Indians, over the Falls in canoes to their death. The Sioux were about to invade the Ojibway Tribe and in her honour, if you look carefully, the figure of Green Mantle, can be seen in the mist of the Falls. |
