Re-post: Planning your holidays?

We know many Postcrossers take their yearly break in the upcoming weeks to relax and visit new places. If you are one of those and you'll be away from your home address for a while, we recommend you to switch your account to the Inactive state - you can do that easily just by editing your Postcrossing account. When you are back, all you need to do is to switch it back to Active and you'll be back in business again! This will tell Postcrossing to not give your address to any other member while you are away. Rest assured that when you're back, they will be sent your way.

Oh, and don't forget to re-stock with postcards from the place where you'll be spending your days away!

Bon voyage!

I usually buy about 30 cards to send to other Postcrossers when I'm away on holiday. =)

I have put myself "inactive" already for my upcoming holiday :).

I have noticed that I can't request new addresses while I'm "inactive" and that's a pity, because the only reason why I want to be "inactive" is to avoid too many postcards in my mailbox while I'm gone and "lost" postcards. Rainy days and a mail carrier who usually only puts the mail half in the mailbox won't make that a good idea.
I do love to keep on sending postcards though, so now I have to make myself "active" and "inactive", each time I want to request anew address for the time being :S.

My suggestion; make "inactive" only affect the cards you receive. I'm sure that there are other members who would like to keep on sending cards, too, while they are on a holiday :).

Thanks :D!

I fully agree with icitaiwan! Like I recently had 3 business trips to Stockholm and Visby, Sweden, each time spending about 3 to 4 weeks, and I kept buying new postcards while in Sweden and sending them to other postcrossing members...

I would love to have the option of sending cards when inactive, too. I suppose I could make my account active just to request postcards when I'm away, and then make it inactive right away so that my address isn't pulled by others while I'm away. But, I am not sure if that defeats the purpose.

Well I prefer to get cards from the user's home country so I don't like the idea of abroad re-stocking of postcards. What always disappoints me a little is e.g. getting a postcard with US ID showing the Eiffel tower in Paris, France.
The inactive option is however great, as long as people use it... I have sent a card to a user, whose profile says "I am in Australia for a month and register all cards when I return", which basically blocks the card slot for the whole month... :-/

I totally agree with my fellow postcrossers about being able to only send cards in the inactive status. I don't know if I have access to Internet in my upcoming holiday but if I do, I would love to still be able to send cards without constantly switching my status. I don't mind receiving cards from people who are on holiday and send a card from a country other then their own; going on holiday is part of almoste everybody's life and in that way it's also a part of postcrossing.

When I'm on holiday, I usually ask my regular postcard-swap pals whether they want a card from that place. I take all their addresses along with me and send the postcards from where I am, so the stamp corresponds with the postcard of the place it's from! ;D

Moono, if you are going to stay at your city address for like a month or longer then you can use your city address, instead of your school one. Or if you are going to stay in the city for a month only then I think it's better if you put it on inactive mode.

It's great thing, but I don't know is it very useful if someone goes on holiday just for 5-7 days???By the way,I think my holiday won't be so long :D Just one week,I think ;)
About sending postcards from your holiday,it's not so bad idea!A postcard should be sent from the place where are you staying on holiday, not when you got home and then send a postcard!!!

I'm happy to say that it's now possible to send postcards while having the account in "Inactive" state :). Happy Postcrossing!

well i dont get the inactive-thing anyway! when i report inactive, cards have already been sent and will get to my mailbox!!!and when i get back i dont get any for weeks, so its only useful if i´m not there over a month...

Surely the best answer, especially now it's possible to send cards while "inactive", would be to set your status to "inactive" a week or two before you go away. That way, you'll stop cards being sent which would arrive while you were away.

Paulo...thanks for the adjustment, it's great :D!

@serenablanch, that's what I do. I usually change my status to "inactive" a month before I go away and change it back when I'm back home, so cards that are still traveling will reach me before I actually go on a holiday :).

Paulo's adjustment makes it easier now to keep on sending cards before I actually go on a holiday and while I'm traveling...awesome!

This is a huge help, being able to send while your account is inactive. Is there any way of publicising this a little more? I am certain that several of my travelling cards at the moment are sitting waiting for someone to return from a holiday. They are taking far too long to be registered.

Im quite lucky i work for the post office so i know my postman personally and he make sure he puts them through the door properly or if he cant manage that he leaves them at my office. It takes a couple of days to catch up but it means others have to wait for me to register the cards i recieve. But often they have been sent long before i go on holiday and have been travelling for some time.
it could just be how each individual countries postal system works.
