DrBird

Hi, I am Berthold, called Dr.Bird. This nick was brought up by my younger Brother, who used to shorten my name to "Bert". When "German people" use the word "Bert" in English, it sounds like "Bird". As I am a biologist my brother "Ede" thought, that it fit my person very well (I am a Neurophysiologist - working in the field of Biochemistry ... - it doesn´t matter) After I defended my thesis in 1989 at the University of Aachen (Germany) Ede called me DrBird, what still is my nick used in the Internet - to be honest : I like that nickname very much :-)

Unfortunately I am already retired for some years due to Health Problems.

Before getting retired, I was active in the German Space Program (Spacelab business) as a Science Manager in the field of Life Sciences. A dream came true beeing as near to the astronaut business as possible. As a young boy I was fascinated by these man walking on the moon - and I am still fascinated. Working very close to the D-2 Project and astronaut office, I had a chance to work in the same area, where Mercury-, Gemini-, Apollo-, and Spaceshuttle projects were realized. Working within the operations control room during a space shuttle mission, when friends of yours are in outer space,was the most exciting time I ever spent. I even had a chance to look into Russian Space program by participating in a MIR - mission. The cosmonauts have been trained for a while in Cologne (D). Great time, getting little bit sad, knowing that these times have gone.

Nevertheless I am happy to be back on my feet on Earth for "some time now" and get a chance to communicate with people like you all over the word via this "old fashioned postcard sending".

Some time ago I found a postcard, I really liked. In front of the postcard there was a wonderful old fashioned garden with children playing in the background and there was written:

"Bridges do not grow by themselves, Bridges have to be build by man and women".

I know that all these postcards crossing the world are very small pieces of paper, but I hope there are so many, many strong postcards, which may build a bridge between the people all over the world - people who just want to live in peace with each other on this beautiful mother Earth.
