The U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of 62+ mountainous, tropical islands, cays and islets located in the eastern Caribbean Sea 1256 miles southeast of Miami. St. Croix is the largest of the four main islands, followed by St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. The total land area is 133.73 square miles. Formerly the Danish West Indies, the United States purchased the islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold, and are recognized as an organized, unincorporated United States territory. |
