Commonly known as "The Man Behind the Wheel," the Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial is a touching tribute inscribed "They're a ship descending to the sea." An estimated 10,000 Gloucester fishermen died at sea. The monument, commissioned in 1923 during the three hundredth anniversary of Gloucester, has become an iconic symbol of the city.
