Sea Otter
Enhydra lutris pups weigh about 3 to 5 lbs. (1.4 to 2.3 kgs) at birth and have light fluffy fur that provides extra buoyancy.  Their mothers provide nourishment, grooming and protection for the first six month of the pup’s life.  Sea otters were hunted to near extinction, but have made a remarkable comeback along the central California, Alaska and British Columbia coasts.  Dependent on the insulating properties of their fur, otters are threatened by oil spills and other pollution.
