Saint Petersburg is located in the north-west of the country at the mouth of the Neva River into the Neva Bay at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The historic city centre with its 2,300 palaces, magnificent buildings and castles has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 under the collective term Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments.
