Ajulejos (tiles) are the trademark of Portugal… a truly national art form that has always known how to renew itself.
They have been used more imaginatively and consistently in Portugal than in any other country.
Today, they still remain a very important part of the country's architecture and they has been and are used for such a variety of purposes and in so many different designs – ornamental art form: churches, palaces, ordinary houses, schools, and nowadays, restaurants, bas and even railways or subways stations (applied on walls, floors and even ceilings,); but also had a specific functional capacity like temperature control in homes.
Azulejos chronicle major historical and cultural aspects of Portuguese history.
