The five-storied Pagoda of Tō-ji dates from 1643. The original pagoda was built in the 9th c., but it was destroyed and rebuilt 4 times before its current state. The pagoda stands 54.8 meters (180 feet) high, and is the tallest wooden tower in Japan.
