"Lamplight roost", Lorne Gill

"When I saw this gull sitting on top of the light with the rising moon behind it," says Lorne, "I thought the scene looked sinister - akin to something from Alfred Hitchcocks's The Birds. The gull, of course, had only practical intentions in mind. It was maximising its feeding opportunities in the short days of winter by roosting next to Arbroath's local chip shop, ready to pounce on fish-supper scraps." Being noisy and bold and increasing in numbers, herring gulls have become public enemy number one in many coastal towns. Urban success is the result of the gull's adaptability, swapping cliff-top life for that of roof-top nester and scavenger.
