Very interesting picture. The annual Goose Fair in Tavistock dates back to the early 12th c. The fair provided the opportunity for animal trading and was also a social event. The name “Goose Fair”came about because geese were traditionally purchased to be fattened for the Christmas market. Often driven in flocks for many miles from their outlying farms. Farmers would fit tipy leather bootees to the webbed feet of their geese to offer a degree of protection for the long journey. |
