This is a postcard of my (leenaj) hometown, Savonlinna, in eastern Finland near the Russian border. At the lower right corner you can see the Olavinlinna (Olavi's castle) which was built to protect Sweden (of which Finland was part of then) against Russia. The castle was founded 1475 and it is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing. Today the Savonlinna Opera Festival takes place there every summer (that's why the white sheet over the centre of the castle). |
