Schwetzingen Palace and Garden
The central Arion Fountain of Guibal has an event from ancient mythology as its theme: Arion (Arion of Lesbos) is a famous singer. Richly rewarded after a competition, he is harassed at sea by the sailors. He asks to sing one last time. When he sings, dolphins appear. The singer throws himself into the water and a dolphin brings him to shore so that he can continue on his way to Corinth. In some traditions, the constellation Dolphin is interpreted as Arion on the dolphin, raptured by the gods to the firmament. |
