Pan
Greek mythological nature deity, statue by the sculpturer Peter Simon Lamine, completed in 1774 after 8 months of work, in the palace garden of Schwetzingen.

In Greek mythology, the legend tells that Pan fell in love with the beautiful Nymph Syrinx. She rejected his advances and denied his love for her. She fled and sought refuge by a lake. There, she implored the sisters of the deeper water to transform her so that Pan would not find her and give her safety. They transformed her into the reeds on the banks of the lake. Pan had just reached for her and grasp her when she was transformed. He held a bunch of reeds in his hand. He heard the sounds which were emitted when the wind blew over the broken reeds. He bound the reeds together and formed the Pan flute. Broken-hearted and sadly missing Syrinx he plays his melodies upon this Pan reed flute while sitting on the rock by the lake.
