Nanga Parbat
The destiny mountain of the Germans
The Nanga Parbat in the western Himalayas, at 8125 m, is the ninth highest mountain and the mightiest freestanding mass elevation of the earth. This gives the mountain its majestic shape, which is expressed by its second name "Diamar" - "King of the mountains". For the climbers, he is one of the most dangerous mountains on earth. A particular challenge is the 4500 m high Rupalwand. The first alpine ascent was undertaken in 1895 by the Englishman Albert F. Mummery. Like many other mountaineers on Nanga Parbat, he was fatally killed. The Nanga Parbat is also called the "The destiny mountain of the Germans ", because several German-Austrian expeditions were unsuccessful in the 1930s, with over 26 climbers and Sherpas dying. Only in 1970, this steep wall and the summit was defeated by a German-Austrian team with Reinhold Messner.
