The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus, English platypus)
is an egg-laying mammal from Australia. It is the only living species of the platypus family (Ornithorhynchidae). Together with the four species of echidnas, it forms the taxon of monotremes (Monotremata), which differ greatly from all other mammals.
