About Anke...

Hi everybody,

I am Anke, a 32 old women living in Osnabrück(a city in the federal state Lower-Saxony in northwestern Germany).
I am really interested in history, inspired of the area where I am living.

Osnabrück became famous for the Peace of Westphalia on 24th of October 1648 which brought the Thirty Years’ War to an end. (In my profile picture you see the door handle of our City Hall which reminds of this date (Friede 1648 = Peace 1648)) and is today also known as „Friedensstadt“ (City of Peace).

Also is the city is the birthplace of Erich-Maria Remarque (1898) who is best-known for his novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the painters Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart (1899) and Felix Nussbaum (1904) , who was tragically murderd in Auschwitz in 1944.

In the Year 9 The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest took place in the region of Osnabrück where an alliance of Germanic tribes, led by Arminius, ambushed and decisively destroyed three Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus.

Modern historians have regarded Arminius' victory as "Rome's greatest defeat" and one of the most decisive battles in history.

Upon hearing of the defeat, the Emperor Augustus, according to the Roman historian Suetonius in De vita Caesarum ("On the Life of the Caesars"), was so shaken that he stood butting his head against the walls of his palace, repeatedly shouting:
"Quintili Vare, legiones redde!“ ('Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!')

In relation with my love of history I am often which my photocamera on the road to take pictures of landscapes or buildings.
Furthermore I love to travel, especially to the United Kingdom, I really, really love the Scottish Highlands and Isles ( Isle of Sky, Isle of Lewis and Harris) for there gorgeous landscapes and also Edinburgh and London for the great architecture (the victorian but also the modern ones).

~~

If I am not traveling arount the world or I am not with my camera on tour I like to read a good book (mostly scandinavian crime like Åke Edwardson or Jo Nesbø) or I am listing to music (Runrig ( a scotish folk-rock band) or Die Toten Hosen ( a german punk-rock band).

I am happy if you could send me some typical tourist postcards with some interesting facts of your city or Land.

But all kinds of postcards are welcome.
