Frequently Asked Questions

What is Postcrossing?
Postcrossing is an online platform that allows anyone to exchange postcards from all over the world, for free.
How did it start?
The project started in 2005 when Portuguese systems engineer and postcard lover Paulo Magalhães thought it would be a good idea to connect different people who shared a love for sending and receiving postcards. You can read more about Postcrossing's history here.
How does Postcrossing work?
In short:
  1. Request an address from the website
  2. Mail the postcard to the address
  3. Wait to receive a postcard
  4. Register the received postcard in the system

The first step is to request to send a postcard. The website will display the address of another member and a a code that identifies that postcard, named the Postcard ID (e.g.: US-786). The sender should then mail a (real) postcard to that member. The member who receives the postcard will register it using the Postcard ID that is on the postcard. At this point, the sender will become eligible to receive a postcard from another random member.

Who are the postcrossers?
Postcrossers are people of all ages and backgrounds, connected by their love for postcards. Since postcards and stamps are available in all cities around the world, Postcrossing can be enjoyed by anyone, from children learning English or Geography in their school to their grandmas - and everyone in between.
How many postcards have been sent through Postcrossing?
To date, a total of 10,374,514 postcards have been sent and received. For updated postcard statistics, go here.
