Blog > Poll results: Kittens, babies, flowers, sunsets!

  icon

A few postcrossers might remember that a long time ago, Flickr had a series of interviews with photographers, in which they always asked the same five questions. One of them was this one:

"When we interview peeps for employment here at Team Flickr, we always ask: “Kittens, babies, sunsets or flowers? Pick one.”

We thought this was a good topic to break the seriousness of last month’s poll and try something different. So… kittens, babies, sunsets or flowers?

Loading chart…

Turns out, it’s sunsets all the way with the Postcrossing crowd! Almost half of us prefer sunsets to any of the other options, followed by kittens, then flowers … and babies always seem to come last! Why is that, i wonder? 🤔

The results are very consistent from country to country too, with South Korea and Lithuania going a bit against the trend and preferring kittens to sunsets.

So what do you think? What motivated your pick, and how do you interpret these results?

PS: We’re always looking for new poll ideas! If you think of something cool to ask postcrossers (and that would fit in a poll), let us know in the comments.

Guess my sunset vote was according to the majority's taste *lol* Why did I pick sunsets? Because they're always different, always a new sight, none is like the other, but every sunset shows the beauty of nature. And why didn't I choose babies? Because (and I hope parents or those who want to be parents can forgive my honest opinion) they all look the same. And, again, pardon my french, they're not cute at all... just my 2 cents of course, but then again I've never been fond of babies or children... ;o) Anyways, happy holidays to every postcrosser worldwide!

I don’t know whether there was already such a poll, but it would be nice to have a poll about how people got to know Postcrossing (magazine, TV, internet, informed by other persons, radio, saw the postcards at work as a postman/postwoman …).

I guess that the result is fair enough. Since the sunset always means the good time and peaceful, it should be the top one of the choices. Babies is not a popular one because it is not the choice of all age. So are the kittens and flowers. They are popular interesting of all age.

On reading the second comment, it inspired me to follow the idea of knowing how people got to know Postcrossing. It should be very interesting to know the so diferent ways we "reached" this site that has already more than 700 000 members in more than 200 countries. How did you get there step by step?

Postcards are very much associated to landscapes, and in my opinion this is reason why sunsets came first. And kitten lovers are really fanatic and focused, so, makes a lot of sense to me.

I love sunsets/sunrises because it symbolizes another blessed day I got to wake up and go to bed. I'm thankful for each and every day I am alive. Yes, some are better than others but even on my worst day, it's always better than the alternative :0

I'm surprised that babies are so little favoured, as there are so many profiles wishing for babies. But there are even more wishing for cats, and all catlovers have voted for kittens, I guess. I'd prefer grown cats to kittens.
I can't remember whether I voted sunsets or flowers. I'm not so keen on sunsets per se, but I love beautiful landscapes, and these are part of most sunset cards.
Did you notice, that the Indians prefer babies to kittens? I wonder why that is so? Are cats not usual as pets in India?

I have a topic to vote for but it might be a little bit difficult to execute... how Postcrossers decide to request address; do they request it as soon as they get an empty slot, request it after a while so they get more slots (maybe about 4-5 addresses) or they let their slot entirely empty so they can request as much as they can?

I was only able to see the options one was allowed to choose. But what was the question? "What are your favourite postcard pictures?", "What don't you like to receive?" or maybe "What do you prefer for lunch?".
In the face of such an explosion of cuteness (Kittens, Babies, Flowers, Sunsets) I would have appreciated a "none of it" option.

I prefer kittens than sunsets but I still LOVE sunsets! Maybe because babies are evil hahah joke!

Am I the only one who finds sunsets sad and prefers sunrises? :D

A cool poll idea is where do you get your postcards. From a post office box, home address, work address or other? I would love to see those poll results!!

I voted for kittens. Can't stand babies and not too keen on flowers. And cats always win.

An interesting question for a poll might be: Where do you buy your postcards? In a local store, online, ...
Or: How fair do you think stamp prices in your country are?

on

I agree with Speicher3's comment. I did not vote due to the absence of a "none of the above" option.

You could ask how ,any countries people have visited in their lives so far :)

on

I voted for kittens with my personal preference being sunsets second and flowers third. I can't stand babies, they pull faces and can look ugly whereas kittens ALWAYS look cute :)

It's the Czech Republic, not Czechia, please!

on

As my username here is Wiese (The German Word for "meadow") I just had to pick flowers. And I really do love all plants in nature. For me they are even more beautiful than sunsets and a good sign to be alive too.

on
meiadeleite, Portugal

@Zojta "Czechia" is just the short version of "Czech Republic" (like "Portugal" and "Portuguese Republic").

Both are valid, as of this year: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_the_Czech_Republic

I was going to pick sunset tho, but as i live in Bali, i've seen so many many beautiful sunsets... so my second choice was the Kitten, because basically i love cats.. Receiving postcards with cats and snow in it would be so wonderful :)

Good poll result. I picked sunset but prefere sunrise, followed by flowers, kitten, babys.
Happy New Year to all of you around this fantastic world. Have a great 2018!!!

on

Well, I picked flowers because I love flowers and plants.
Kittens are not my thing.And Babies: ugh!

on

I voted for sunsets. It was the first which came into my mind. But I also love babies and kittens - well, not for postcards. If you had asked me 20 or 30 years before, I am sure I would have voted babies. :)

@alexturner8 That is a cool idea!

To be honest I really missed an answer "against all". Firstly cuz I was thinking about cards I could to send or cards I would be glad to receive.

Kittens and cats? They're almost "gods of Internet" but got me tired. exception is made for two of my favorite breeds or image of wild cats, but no more. Oh, idea: mrs Figg's cats welcome too)))

Babies? One time my mum said me non-popular but honest opinion "I adore my children, my family, but I don't like others people's children". Also, recipient can be a kind of "beware human": a radical childfree, can't have a children or loose a child... Too painful. It is a reason not to send this kind of cards, isn't it?

Flowers and sunsets? Honestly they are leaders of my "dunno what to sent and I'll send THIS" category. That's funny but they send out the first and I always buy a pair in every card shopping (don't be confused with the views of the city, there are other reasons for them).
About receiving that cards: I love very beautiful or very unusual sunsets, I love lotus flower, I love things which can be admired... But in general receiving flower and sunset cards are like a lottery: or yes or not.

In any case, this is just my personal opinion

@bowyum, @speicher3
Of course there is the possibility to choose "none of the above": just don't vote ;)

I have just made a list of the counties I have visited, in preparation for a possible poll on the subject. Unfortunately I cannot now recall all of the stopovers made on international flights, but I vividly remember being stuck in Abu Dhabi for hours when the plane broke down!

I will be delighted if postcrossing can run a poll on which of the following education system will be appropriate for students at the senior high school level.
* Boarding School
Or
* Day School.

A poll can also be done on these following.

*Same sex school
*Single sex School.

I chose kittens:D

For the poll I thought we could ask for favourite/prominent season of the year or maybe favourite hobby (singing/listening to music, dancing,reading,sports)

on
_samy_, India

Or maybe what kind of postcards are their favourite
Example
-Scenery
-animals
-paintings
-movies ??

@LuserinaBarows

Obviously you are a human being - all the others are vampires ☺

Annyeoung hasseo, hola, hello. I wish you all a wonderful and safe New Year's Eve, and may 2018 bring many good things!

I chose sunset, as I find them beautiful and romantic. When alone, they are also a good backdrop for reflecting on ones thoughts.

My suggestion for a poll would be if people prefer a crowd/party, a small gathering of just a few friends/family members, or to be alone.

on
ilikeharrypotter, United States of America

I think a favorite season would be nice.

@Snegurotschka
O______O Does this mean...tthis is actually a secret website for vampires that are pretending to be humans...eeek!! *runs away*

lol, I must be the only one who would pick babies over all the other choices. Why babies? I have two adorable granddaughters and a coming grandson. I was a nanny for 7 1/2 years, and I worked with little kids. I think all babies are the cutest thing ever! I talk to all babies. I HATE cats of all kinds, eww, all that hair flying around.. I do love sunsets, and flowers are great. So don't bark at me for my choices.
