About Stephen...

My hope for mail is to rejoin the hand to the spirit; the foot to the hand; paper to the word.

To serve the world of common air and surfaces, against the airless, groundless marketplace of e-attention.

To find the only sight and word worth winning: ours.

I've been involved in mail art for several decades, beginning in the late 80s, when I invited people to contribute, by mail, to an art series here (on cable). I enjoy postcards, but much else related: art video, letter-art, poetry, detourned ads, homemade stamps, small objects, headlines that read like poetry (e.g., "High Speed Line Delayed Again"). My favorite postcards and photos I hang on a decorative plywood board in my kitchen (not above the stove).
Media is of special interest to me, though not social media. I've lived long enough to watch my preference for snail mail shade into a sort of resistance. Postcrossing is a fine service and tool for me in this way. (A little info about the recent decline in person-to-person mail below.*)
If my address pops up for you to post-cross, feel free to send something in an envelope, or a postcard if you prefer, commercial or handmade. Surprise me. I like getting all sorts of info, local color, and imagery in the mail. Architectural. Cinematic. Theological. Tribal (not in the political sense). Culinary (favorite recipe?). Animals (which I love, cute or not). Collage (i.e., handmade cards). Icons/logos of your own, celebrating/symbolizing you. Dreams.

*Between 1995 and 2013, the volume of First Class, single-piece mail (i.e., not mass-mailed junk), has shrunk to just 39% its pre-Internet levels.
