About Gary...

My name is Gary and I am a radiologist living with my husband in Mason City, Iowa, in the central USA. We have 6 children, 8 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. My medical speciality is Mammography and breast cancer.

Besides the numerous farms that grow corn and soybeans, Mason City is noted for being the birthplace of Meredith Willson, who composed a famous American Musical called "The Music Man."

Our town also has the world's last remaining hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which is now a lovely boutique hotel.

If you have ever seen the movie "The Sound of Music," the puppets used in "The Lonely Goatherd" are housed in our local museum, as Bill Baird, the man who designed them, was born and raised in Mason City.

If you are a rock and roll fan, Mason City is just 16 km East of Clear Lake, where the famous Surf Ballroom is located--home of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper's last concert. Unfortunately, all three died in a plane crash immediately following the concert, a few kilometers from where I live.

I will love any postcard you send. I enjoy strange and bizarre cards. If you wish, send me your worst card. Feel free to send a card that you acquired in a moment of bad judgment, a card that is so hideous you wouldn't even send it to your worst enemy, or a card that would make your mother ashamed of you. You can send me a torn or damaged card. You can send me the dumb card that was hidden inside a multi-pack of nicer cards. Send me anything. (If you are new to Postcrossing and don't yet have any terrible postcards, or if you are just not the type of person to send awful postcards, you can send me beautiful, wonderful, strange, or amazing cards as well. I won't complain.)

Many people ask me how I know Cantonese, since I'm obviously not Chinese. I lived in Hong Kong in the 1980's, and spoke Cantonese almost exclusively during that time. Unfortunately, I don't read enough Chinese characters to communicate in written Chinese, but I can still speak well enough to frighten elderly Chinese women.

I have lived in New Zealand (Hamilton), Utah (Orem, Price, Providence, Provo and Tooele), Colorado (Boulder and Colorado Springs), Hong Kong (Kowloon City, Shaukiwan, Lam Tin, Cheung Sha Wan), Macau, Taiwan (Taipei), Maryland (Germantown), Germany (St. Leon-Rot), Hawaii (Honolulu, Laie) and Iowa (Mason City).

I have also visited China, Thailand, South Korea, Israel, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Spain, England, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Bermuda, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, St. Maarten, St. Barth's, St. Thomas, Fiji, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and all the United States except Arkansas and North Dakota.

I always register postcards the day I receive them, but I am out of town every 5th week, so sometimes there is a delay.
