Hi there! I live in Lancaster, in the northwest of England, not far from the area known as the Lake District -a good insight into the weather patterns here; the Lakes literally fall out of the sky!

I've had a really privileged adult working mainly at University level with smart, funny and very engaging students. I can't imagine life without them, and as I'm about 3 times the age of most of them, it's great that they're willing to be so open, friendly and sociable with me. My subject when I lectured was English Lit, so as you can imagine I'm an avid reader - please feel free to send recommendations, or to ask for some.

My other hobbies are usually related to using my hands in some way. I love making things, working on my very beautiful Victorian house, baking bread, and cycling - bicycle and motorcycle. I've always been a traveller, too - I adore visiting new countries, trying to get beneath the skin of the culture and understand how the locals think and work, or pick up a smattering of language. Travelling has taught me that we're all driven by the same human values, by and large - the need for friendship, love, a safe and secure environment to live in and some food to eat, and we want our families and friends to share pretty much the same. I've also discovered that trusting strangers is a great thing to do,- I've rarely been let down, but I have had some of the best times and conversations with people I've met by chance and am unlikely ever to see again.

I guess that's why I like Postcrossing (and the Listserve - look it up!) - it's all about sharing things with strangers in a pleasing, human-scale sort of way. I think of myself as not very harmful to the planet - I try to be Green, am a lifelong vegetarian, don't own a car, am proud of my children and their values, and the older I get, the younger I feel.

I'm an Earthling - not a believer in borders, wars, religions, the politics of greed, envy or power - I despise the rich and all class-based systems that keep some folk poor, uneducated or disenfranchised just to serve more powerful people's own selfish ends - and I'd love to hear how your world works from where YOU are standing currently!
