About John...

I live in Des Moines, Iowa, and work for the Postal Service, in a large mail processing plant. I enjoy reading (just about everything), writing (from letters and journal entries to four or five book projects I've got going) and painting (watercolors - I've only been at it for about 10 years and mostly do abstracts, with some showing up on postcards), as well as spending time with my Golden Retriever, Jack. I have three granddaughters (18, 14, and 10) who live nearby. I was a high school foreign language teacher for a long time, and still substitute teach when I can work it into my schedule.
Except for being in California, Florida and Spain while I was in the Navy (obviously a long time ago), I've lived my whole adult life in the Midwest in the states of Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, in addition to where I live now), which I like because it's so green everywhere! I grew up on the Mississippi River close to where Mark Twain lived as a boy. I do, however, like living in a large enough place now to be able to go to the symphony, theatre and concerts, as well as hang out in coffeehouses, bookstores, museums, libraries and art galleries.
Last summer I had surgery for pancreatic cancer and recently finished with chemotherapy treatment, and amon the way to a full recovery, even though it will still be awhile before I am at 100%.
I enjoy finding out about the rest of the world; having been a foreigner once myself gives me a certain sensitivity to others. I work with people from all over the world and really enjoy being around that sort of diversity.
Any kind of postcard is fine with me - whatever anybody wants to send me, as I am not picky in the least, and so no need to list what I would like to see, or my personal favorites. I am grateful for any card anybody wants to send me.
And if you get a card from me it will have plenty of writing on it, including the date, what the weather's like, and a bit about what I'm doing, or possibly stories about what I've done, or maybe an explanation about a picture on the card.
I'm also interested in writing letters, and would welcome penpals for anybody interested - I can write long letters and always have a lot to say, and would not limit them to English: I can write in a few other languages, too, and welcome the chance to practice them when I can. For anyone who is not a native speaker of English, when writing me, please feel comfortable with saying whatever you want and I will know what you mean, as if we were talking in person.

I look forward to sending and receiving postcards and letters to and from all over the place.
I do need to mention that, since downloading Windows 10, my scanner has not been working properly, and so it will probably be some time before I am able to display postcards I receive or send, but I promise will do that once I have this matter resolved.
I first found out about Postcrossing from someone I know on Bookcrossing
