Houston, Texas - the Johnson Space Center was established in 1961 as the Manned Spaceflight Center, the home and Mission Control Center for the U.S. human space flight ptrogram. In 1973, it was renamed in honor of the late President, and Texas native, Lyndon B. Johnson. 1958: NASA begins operations on October 1st, one year after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satelite. 1969: July 20, Man walks on the moon. 1990: the Hubble Space Telescope is launched. 1997: Mars Pathfinder lands on The Red Planet. 2000: the first crew takes up residence in the intertational Space Station.
