Native Americans named this impressive landmark 'Tahoma,' meaning 'the mountain that was god.' Although the English explorer George Vancouver renamed it in 1792 after the British admiral Peter Rainier, the towering peak continues to inspire an almost sacred awe in all those who approach its base. At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the tallest peak of the Cascade Range. Mount Rainier National Park, established in 1899, preserves the fragile and fascinating environment of Mount Rainier and its surroundings.
