Built by Father Damien de Veuster shortly before he died, April 15, 1889. The small part to the right, included in the present church marks the original church used by Father Damien most of his 16 years at Kalawao (1873-1889). In the middle of the picture is Father Damiens' tombstone, in 1936 his remains were taken to Louvain, Belgium, and placed in the chapel of St. Joseph, where he entered the relicious life.
