This is a wonderfully suggestive picture. Even though it's a photograph, the boy with the kite actually seems to be standing between the world of the living and the dead. Are the two people watching from the brightly-illuminated cemetery on the left meant to be relations who have passed away, or are the deceased intended to be sitting in the shadows on the right? Or is my interpretation way too fanciful? I wonder if the photographer, Chris Steele-Perkins, has ever written about the photo s/he first published with Magnum in 1998. |
