Many Japanese people make their first visit of the year to shrines on New Year’s Day to pray for a new year of peace and happiness and to get a hama-ya, or good luck arrow, with the hope their prayers will come true. They keep this arrow in their house for one year and return it to the shrine the following New Year’s Day.
