Sinj is small town in Dalmatia (southern coastal province in Croatia), nearby Split. Town is famous for its traditional knight tournamanet "Alka". Alka is memorial to great victory in August 14th 1715, when 700 Sinj soldiers saved town from attack of 60 000 Turkish soldiers lead by Mehmed-paša Čelić.
In medieval times similar tournaments were widely popular thrughout Europe, but Alka of Sinj is the only one still present. Only honourable men who were born in Sinj can run it. This is why Sinj has the greatest birth rate in Croatia, women from other towns deliberatly come to Sinj to give birth, in hope that their sons one day will run Alka.
As such, Alka is listed in UNESCO list of intangible heritage.
