Although it is difficult to determine who painted specific details, the figure – larger than usual for Hardy – may be by O'Neill; while the foreground is in Hardy's style. The old lady is surprised by the return of the man, whose foot appears in the doorway. Perhaps he is a son, who emigrated and was not expected to return?
