The mountain village of Valldemossa was known by the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, who spent the winter of 1838/39 there with the French writer George Sand in the Carthusian monastery.
The Carthusians are a Catholic order that combines the monastic hermits with the lifestyle and goes back to the Saint Bruno of Cologne.
