Common Loon: Of the five species of loon, the Common Loon is the best known to us with a breeding range across most of Canada. They migrate to warmer areas around the Gulf of Mexico to winter, and return to northern lakes to breed when the ice melts in spring. Loons have come to symbolize wilderness and solitude, and campers would feel their trip incomplete without viewing a loon or hearing its haunting call.
