About Julia...

I am a thirty-something (approaching forty-something, but who's counting) German woman living in Finland. I'm a linguist by training, but for the last (almost) ten years, I've been working in technical documentation and (occasionally) adult education.

My hobbies and interests include languages and cultures, literature (OK, that's just a fancy way of saying "I like to read"), food (both cooking and eating), various arts and crafts, ... And recently, after all those years of writing nonfiction (exciting texts about software interfaces and radio waves), I've started writing short stories (exciting texts about people). Let's see how that goes... So far, all I can say that it seems to be a lot harder than writing postcards.

Speaking of which. I do have some special preferences (see below), but I appreciate any kind of postcard: artsy, funny, kitschy, educational; handmade or store bought; photograph, drawing, or text; whatever. I have no strong preferences regarding motifs, subjects, or styles, either. Send me whatever YOU like (or whatever you think someone with my background might like). Or something that's typical for your home country or culture. But if the motif includes text that's not in one of the languages I listed above, please include a translation (or at least summary) if possible! And please write a little more than just "Happy Postcrossing" if you can... If you don't know what to write, you could for example tell me why you picked this particular card -- why you like it or why you think I might like it. :-)

And I like snails -- my user ID "schnecki" means "little snail" in German. So, if you happen to find a postcard with a snail motif, feel free to send it to me. The style doesn't matter; I'll be happy about photographs of snails (or snail shells), cartoon snails, or any other kinds of snail pictures. But please, no pictures of cooked escargots ("edible snails"); I prefer my snails alive and happy... -- If you don't happen to find a postcard with a snail motif, feel free to send me any other kind of postcard. See above.

(And sorry for the quality, or lack thereof, of the pictures I upload. I don't have a scanner, so I have to take the pictures with my digital camera...)

By the way, if you happen to speak a German dialect (from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or neighboring regions such as Alsace) or a closely related language (such as Letzeburgisch, Yiddish, Dutch, Texasdeutsch, or Pennsylvania Dutch), please write me in your language/dialect if you want! :-D I'll probably be able to understand it, even though I may not be able to speak or write the language/dialect myself...
