Päivää and God dag Postcrossers!

Many of you are already avid fans of Moomins/MuminTroll/Muumi. The Moomins are the major characters in the series of comic strips and books illustrated and written by renowned Finnish artist Tove Jansson, who declared that his characters are partially based on many of her family and friends.

The main appearance of Moomins is very similar to hippopotamuses but they are actually a family of trolls who live in Moominvalley. The Moomins interact with their friends such as Hemulens, Sniff, The Snork maiden, Snufkin and Little My. The major premise of most Moomin stories revolves around the idea of accepting the differences of others and accommodating their specific needs.

Moomins

The first book was released in 1945 and soon more books, a comic strip series, and a television adaptation followed. There are even a number of movies based on Jansson’s lovable family of trolls. Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Britain, Austria, Germany, and Japan all made TV and movie adaptations of the Moomins.

Moomins

It was not long after the success of Moomins (called the Moomin Boom) reached its peak as operas, Moomin products, playrooms, museums, albums, and even a Moomin theme park emerged in many parts of Finland and Japan.

Since I'm young ( compare to 1945 ) and raised in Canada ( a bit closed for a bit country ) and watched Moomins when I was a kid, I'd never thought I'd find them later when I'd move to Europe. I even found a book one day, what a surprise !
So much memories ^_^
I didn't know it was so popular ! OO !

I never heard about moomins before I started Postcrossing. I guess it was not on television in Germany or Belgium.

I like the Moomins mainly not because they look cute, but because the stories in the books are so great. Tove Jansson was a skillful author. The great thing is that the same novels can be read by a child or an adult, and they both can enjoy them in their own way: children get the adventure, adults get the philosophy. The books are really not children's books, they are very high quality adult novels. I recommend reading if you can find any in your language! (They have been translated to many languages.)

Some of the comic strips and cartoons are fascinating also, but they partially represent a bit different Moomin-world. I prefer the novels :-)

7 years ago I travelled to Finland and find some Moomin thiing. I remembered that we had this tale in the TV when I was a child. Unfortunately, not too much of mí friends remember them:(
If someone knows, where can I find Moomin videos in Hungarian, please tell me! I want it for my nephews. (I find some small books, but the were very-very expensive)

When I was in Finland last I went to a Moomin museum and was totally blown away but the tiny size, fine lines and simple beauty of Tove Jansson's artwork. Just gorgeous.

I agree with Inp about the importance of the Moomon stories. They have hidden wisdom what you can interpret differently depending how old you are , when you read them. So read them , if you can !

If you visit Tampere in Finland (about an hour and a half by train from Helsinki), don't forget to stop by The Moominvalley of the Tampere Art Museum:

In Naantali (Finland) there is a place called The Moominworld:

Moomins are so lovely. When my daughter was about 3 or 4 years old (now she's 18) she has two or three puzzles with Moomins on it; she loved it.
