Hawai’i Volcanoes
National Park
Pele’s seaweed: When volcano deity Pele meets her sister, sea deity Namakaokaha’i, there may be an explosive greeting. Sea water can become trapped under rapidly flowing lava, flash to steam to create bubbles of lava that burst like a balloon. The translucent sheets of spatter from these burst bubbles are called limu a Pele (Pele’s Seaweed).
