About Kenard...

Hello!

My name is Kenard and I'm a newly-minted historian currently broadcasting from my hometown in northern Arizona, where I moved back to after I graduated from Harvard in May 2023. During the isolation of the pandemic, I got back into the hobby of Postcrossing, to connect once again with so many interesting people around the world. Unfortunately, my account was deleted from inactivity, so here we are with account 2.0!

I grew up and went to school at the western edge of the Navajo Nation reservation till I moved away for college; I’m Navajo, San Carlos Apache, and Hopi. I took a lot of breaks in college, during which I bounced around the U.S. and South America (I even lived for a year in Brazil), but I finally graduated with my undergraduate degree in History. My studies focus on colonization and imperialism in Latin America, specifically in Brazil. I research the history of Japanese migrants in Brazil (the largest Japanese diaspora in the world), and my senior thesis was about the forced cultural assimilation of Japanese communities during a period between 1930-45 called the Era Vargas. I hope to continue that focus in grad school and eventually, I hope to be a history teacher or professor when I’m older and have my sea legs in life.

Outside of my studies, and aside from postcard collecting (which I started in 2011 when I was 16), I enjoy reading and letter writing, running, geography, the works of Gustav Klimt (my favorite painter), a nice mug of coffee or tea, an excellent red wine, eating new foods from around the world, dinner parties with my friends, language learning, and horror movies (an appreciation I gained from pandemic free time). I am happiest when I can enjoy the solitude of nature on a hike/run, or when I'm able to eat, drink, and converse with my friends late into the evening.

When it comes to postcards, I really like:
-Art/photography cards
-Food cards
-GREETINGS FROM cards
-Views from your region/town/city
-Vintage cards and postage stamps
-Homoerotic art or anything queer, really
-Socialist/communist propaganda
-AIR MAIL / PAR AVION labels
-For our friends from former Soviet republics, vintage Soviet cards if that is at all possible!

Of course, these are just my personal preferences, and you are free to send whatever you like! If you can't think of anything to write on the fly, a film or book rec is appreciated! The only thing I ask is not to send the card in an envelope, please.

All the best, and sending solidarity,

xx
Kenard

p.s. If you're wondering about the odd/comical name of my hometown, the Mormons established a trading post here in 1870. They named the place after a Hopi guy named Tuuvi who converted to their religion. Something got lost in translation, so Tuuvi ended up being written down as Tuba.
